In the world of used affordable motorcycles, there is almost no bike that can compete with a Suzuki SV650. SV’s were great values when they were new and they still are among the best as used bikes. They came in Naked and Sport styles to suit different tastes- I prefer the upright seating position of the Naked bike for riding around town but guys that like the mountains might prefer the S model with clip-ons. With the motorcycle market in disarray due to the economy, bikes of all types and price ranges can be found for great deals. If you are in the market for a bike, there has never been a better time to buy than now.

Back to the SV- I recently saw an 07 naked model in perfect shape sell for 3500.00 in the “for sale” section of a bike forum. The bike had slightly high miles (9000) but had been very well taken care of. If you are willing to drop back a few years, 03-05’s are all in the 3-3500.00 range and you can often find them with very low miles.

Because SV’s are so popular, the aftermarket companies have made tons of stuff for them including better seats for more comfort, luggage for touring and lots of performance parts like exhaust systems, suspension components and carbon fiber body pieces. With a little custom paint like the bike in the picture, a  SV can be completely unique.

In general, SV’s are pretty bullet-proof but look for the typical signs of abuse like leaking fork seals, rubber stuck to the underside of the back fender (burn-outs) and of course crash damage. Since so many SV’s have been sold, it should not be hard to find a nice one and with winter setting in, the deals will probably get better!
