Don't be stupid

This article over at MSNBC   spotlights a big problem for US motorcyclists. With recreational and commuter use on the rise, motorcycle deaths and injuries are a big problem for everyone involved- the gov’t, manufacturers and of course the families of those killed. I fix a lot of wrecked bikes here at National Superbike so I see the problem first hand – fortunately, I don’t know of any fatalities from bikes I’ve sold but I do seem to repair a lot of them.

I think a good bit of the problem is with poor rider training. The weekend rider who has never taken a real safety course like the ones offered by MSF are almost guaranteed to be involved in an accident. It is really that simple. Ego, stupidity and laziness are the real enemy. Poor equipment (or no equipment) add to the problem and would make a big difference in many cases. So, don’t be stupid- ride with the right gear and take the safety courses. They will save your life.

  1. Get trained and licensed
  2. Wear protective gear — all the gear, all the time — including a helmet manufactured to the standards set by the DOT
  3. Ride unimpaired by alcohol or other drugs
  4. Ride within your own skill limits
  5. Be a lifelong learner by taking refresher rider courses
