To no one’s surprise, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart, the man who supercross fans everywhere expect to fill the void left by Carmichael’s active retirement from supercross and motocross to pursue a career in NASCAR, grabbed the torch and ran with it, earning his 12th career win in the AMA’s premier supercross class. The 21-year-old Floridian came from behind, twice, during the 20-lap main event, first overcoming a holeshot by injured Yamaha star Chad Reed to take the early lead, only to crash on lap four and hand the lead to Carmichael.
