The AMA site has an article up on the vintage races at Mid-Ohio. This might be the perfect outlet for those of us past our prime (way past) who still have the need for speed. The scary part is that the bikes I used to race a “few” years ago are now considered vintage.
One of the true highlights of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is always the American Historic Racing Motorycle Association competition on the 2.4-mile Mid-Ohio road course.
And one of the big winners of VMD 2006 was Pat Mooney, who ran away with the victory in the 500 Premier class on his Norton.
Mooney, a veteran of vintage racing, has won eight races in a row in the class this year, starting with Bike Week in Daytona. But he notes that taking the checkered flag at VMD is always special.
“The whole affair here is great,” he says. “The classic racing, the swap meet, people of the caliber of Giacomo Agostini.
“Daytona is Daytona, but this event is so well-promoted. That’s why I keep coming back.”
One of the big attractions of vintage racing for Mooney is the fact that the machinery doesn’t change every season.
“You can buy one motorbike and use if basically for an infinite number of years,” he says, noting that he’s even still using the same set of Dunlop tires that he mounted for Daytona.
